Highlights, England vs Pakistan, 1st Test, Day 4 at Lord’s, Full Cricket Score: Visitors win by 9 wickets

Catch the LIVE score and updates from Day 4 of first Test between England and Pakistan at Lord’s cricket ground.

Day 3 report: Jos Buttler and Dom Bess shared a spirited century stand to save England from a humiliating innings defeat by Pakistan in the first Test at Lord’s on Saturday.

The pair came together with the hosts reeling at 110 for six, 69 runs behind the touring side and heading for their first loss in a May Test at the home of cricket inside three days.

England captain Joe Root (L) and Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed pose with the trophy ahead of the 1st Test at Lord’s. AP

Buttler, recalled to the side, and debutant Bess calmly added 125 in the evening sunshine to take England to 235 for six and a narrow lead of 56 runs.

“We wanted to scrap hard and try and get ourselves back in the game,” Buttler said.

“With Dom Bess, it was like Joe Root walked back out, with his back foot punches and cover drives. He’s got a great character and he really showed that.”

Pakistan, however, should still complete a deserved victory on Sunday.

They added 13 runs to their overnight 350 for eight to extend their lead to 179 and quickly started running through England’s brittle batting line-up.

Alastair Cook, who top-scored with 70 in the first innings, was trapped lbw by Mohammad Abbas for one and Mark Stoneman, under severe pressure for his place in the team, made a scratchy nine before he was bowled by leg-spinner Shadab Khan before England limped to lunch at 37 for two.

Captain Joe Root batted patiently, content to defend and take advantage of the rare loose balls served up by a disciplined Pakistan attack.

He reached his 50 before Mohammad Amir took centre stage with two wickets in one over.

Brilliant Delivery

Pakistan’s left-arm seamer found the edge of Dawid Malan’s bat to dismiss him for 12 and two balls later Amir produced a brilliant inswinging delivery to bowl Jonny Bairstow and leave England in deep trouble at 91 for four.

Ben Stokes clipped his first ball through square leg for four and followed up with another crisp boundary but, on nine, he tried to hit Shadab through the leg-side and was well caught at short mid-wicket.

The packed crowd was stunned into silence as Buttler walked out to the middle and Root was next to go, snared lbw by Abbas for 68 and failing to get the decision overturned on review.

It was the 10th time in a row that Root has failed to convert a Test fifty into a century and his dismissal ended England’s realistic hopes of winning the match.

Buttler and Bess clung on till tea, however, and played sensibly in the final session.

Buttler struck five fours in reaching his half-century and 20-year-old off-spinner Bess, who failed to take a wicket, showed great maturity in a supporting role.

He played some polished attacking strokes and his fifty was greeted by warm applause from the packed crowd as he raised his bat to all corners of the ground.

It was probably too little too late for England, who were desperate to make a strong start to the two-Test series following their heavy Ashes defeat in Australia and a rare loss to New Zealand.

But at least Buttler, who finished on 66 not out, and Bess (55 not out) justified their selections and gave their team a bit of confidence ahead of a potentially even more difficult five-Test series against top-ranked India.

The Premadasa pitches are known to be low and slow, but they are likely to help the fast bowlers at the start of the T20I tri-series. There is a slim chance of a thunderstorm in the evening. Dinesh Karthik will tussle with Pant for the wicketkeeper’s spot. Yuzvendra Chahal and Jaydev Unadkat are likely to return to the XI despite being left out for the third T20I in Cape Town. Sundar will compete with Hooda for the allrounder’s spot, while KL Rahul, who hasn’t played a T20I since December 2017, might get a game in the absence of key players. Kusal Perera, Suranga Lakmal and Dushmantha Chameera might return to the XI. Having secured a thumping series win in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka might not tinker too much with their team.

Sri Lanka ended up losing their last 7 wickets for an additional 154 runs, and didn’t even get to the follow-on waiver mark. Report, Day 2: A day after making a remarkable unbeaten 158, Dimuth Karunaratne again tormented South Africa with a half-century as Sri Lanka began to lock up the first Test after day two on Friday.

Karunaratne became only the fourth Sri Lankan to carry his bat through in the first innings, and his 60 second time around helped Sri Lanka to extend its lead to 272 runs.

South Africa face a tall order to save the match on a crumbling pitch with plenty of assistance for spin bowlers.

Sri Lanka’s stand-in captain Suranga Lakmal and South Africa captain Faf du Plessis. Agencies

Hashim Amla, who captained South Africa to a 1-0 series win the last time the Proteas were in Sri Lanka in 2014, said 272 was already a handy lead for the pitch.

“If we manage to restrict them to, I’d say 320, then certainly that would be a good target for us,” Amla said. “If a couple of us have a good partnership and one of us plays like Karunaratne played, that would get us close to that score.”

The visitors were bowled out for 126, their lowest total against Sri Lanka, eclipsing the 168 all out in Durban in 2011.

“Like most pitches, as the days go on the deterioration occurs,” Amla said. “Today, it spun a little bit more than yesterday. Tomorrow, maybe in the morning session it might not spin as much and then break up and spin more and more.”

Sri Lanka were 111-4 in its second innings. Left-arm orthodox spinner Keshav Maharaj picked up the first three wickets but, with a healthy first-innings lead of 161 runs, the hosts could play with freedom.

With five overs left to stumps, South Africa paceman Kagiso Rabada dismissed Karunaratne, who was caught at slip by Hashim Amla.

Danushka Gunathilaka (17) added 51 runs for the first wicket with Karunaratne and the former was dismissed when he gave Maharaj the charge but couldn’t clear the boundary. Rabada ran to his left from long-on to complete the catch.

With the total on 64, Maharaj struck twice in the space of four deliveries, removing Dhananjaya de Silva (9) and Kusal Mendis (0) in quick succession. Mendis unsuccessfully reviewed after being given leg before wicket.

Maharaj, however, couldn’t trouble Karunaratne as the left-hander was solid in defense and punished the loose balls with a couple of elegant drives. He was Sri Lanka’s best batsman in 2017 having posted over 1000 runs in Tests.

He missed Sri Lanka’s recent tour of the Caribbean due to injury.

The Proteas had a dramatic collapse in the morning. Resuming from the overnight score of 4-1, the Proteas lost five wickets in the morning session for just 82 runs as the three-pronged spin attack of Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera and Lakshan Sandakan shared the bulk of the bowling.

Stand-in skipper Suranga Lakmal, the lone seamer in the Sri Lanka side, brought himself on in the last over before lunch and by then the spinners had sent down 37 overs.

From 51-6, South Africa recovered somewhat to reach 115-6 thanks to a seventh-wicket stand between Vernon Philander (18) and Francois du Plessis (49). Sri Lanka made the breakthrough after lunch as Philander was ruled leg before wicket to Dilruwan Perera, who finished with four wickets.

“What we have realized is that they don’t play offspin too well,” said Perera, who took 16 wickets in the 2014 series. “That has been evident in their last few series they have played. Maybe that is one reason why I picked up four wickets today.

“We didn’t expect to get them bowled out for 126, though.”

Lakmal hastened South Africa’s collapse with a superb piece of seam bowling accounting for the last three batsmen including captain Du Plessis, who was clean bowled by a delivery that cut back in sharply.
