Afghanistan vs Hong Kong, 6th Match, Group B – Live Cricket Score, Commentary

That’s it. Join us tomorrow for the Dharamsala double-header. For now, it’s a goodbye from Pratyush Sinha on behalf of my co-commentators Sagar Chawla, Raju Peethala, Bharath Ramaraj and Abhishek Chaudhary. Ta-ta.

What a bummer this was – like a cheap dessert to cap off a five course meal. But we will take it. No complaints. A peek into the World T20 so far promises great returns for all the eye-blinding TV gazing, with fielding topping the hope charts. Afghanistan were just too good tonight. Interestingly, the toss tussle between these two teams continues. If you aren’t aware, here it is: whenever these two teams have fisted it out, the team losing the toss has won the game. That’s much Dhoni-like. The match between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan carries high stakes now – the winning team gets the Super 10 glory.

Stanikzai: “Yes, they batted well but we came back to take two wickets early. Rashid bowled very well. Nabi is in good form and our go-to guy. We will hopefully beat Zimbabwe. We have won the last 4-5 matches against them. Our team is in good form and we will try our best.”

Afzal: “I think we had a good platform after first five overs and we were in a position to get to 140. But it’s tough for the latter batsmen to come and take charge. Wickets made it hard to bat through. We take so many positives. We will regroup and come back with the confidence to win the last game versus Scotland.”

Mohammad Nabi: “Yes, very happy about my performance. 4/20 is my best figure in World Cups. I looked at the pitch – they were slow and used variations in the bowling to pick four wickets. Very happy and always ready to get the ball in any situation – powerplay or death overs. I like to bowl in both those periods.”

Mohammad Nabi is the Man of the Match for his surreal figures of 4/20

So we have the first lopsided result of the tournament. Hong Kong started well with both bat and ball but didn’t take long to lose their way either time. 117 would have taken some defending. And they weren’t good enough. The bowlers were disciplined to begin with and managed to curb Shahzad’s natural instincts early on. That was before Nadeem’s left-arm spin unleashed all evil and opened the floodgates. Shahzad was eventually stalled at 41 mistiming a slog to long-off, and then a spurt of wickets towards the end induced a stutter but Najibullah broke the trance, took the match by the scruff and romped home. It leaves Hong Kong high and dry and knocks them out of the tournament.

H Amjad to Najibullah, FOUR, Hong Kong and Scotland have been dumped out. A direct shootout between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe will give us an elitist Super Ten newbie. And Afghanistan pummel their opponents to a win. And get there aptly. Horror delivery down leg, Zadran just turned and tickled it away. A ball that sums up Hong Kong’s bowling and Afghanistan‘s intent

H Amjad to Najibullah, no run, off-cutter on a fuller length, Zadran wanted to finish in style but the ball razored away and under Zadran’s cross-batted swing

H Amjad to Najibullah, FOUR, even lesser effort this time. And how do you hit on the up here at the VCA? Stayed in the crease, allowed the length ball to come in and let out a flowy punch through long-on

Sri Lanka vs Pakistan, 12th Match, Group B – Live Cricket Score, Commentary

A plot of Mickey Arthur’s expressions today versus time would sum up Pakistan, and this chase, for you. They were reluctant, even nervous, until Sri Lanka’s (mis)fielding charitably shoved them over the line. So they now take on England at Cardiff in the first semifinal. And India then take on “arch-rivals” Bangladesh in the other. Champions Trophy is alive, again, and Sarfraz’s zero Kelvin nerves have forced it. Do join us for the matches. Today was fun. This is Pratyush Sinha exiting the comm. box with Pradeep, Akshay Maanay, Venkatesh, Sriram and Kumar Abhisekh Das. Go, catch a breath, charge your phones, ta-ta!

Mathews – captain, SL: “Bit of a see-saw game. Credit to Pakistan. They held their nerves towards the end. It was bit of a funny wicket. Was stopping a bit. We hadn’t got the runs on the board but we knew we could bowl well and restrict them. The bowlers were brilliant. Pakistan batted brilliantly, but unfortunately we dropped a few catches. Proud of the boys. Even though we had 236 to defend, we gave it our all. Proud of the bowlers. The tournament was quite good. Even in the first game, we had our chances but we collapsed in the middle. Even today, we got our way to a good position at 160 for 3, but lost our way. In a big tournament like this, the boys held it well.”

Sarfraz Ahmed – MoM | captain, Pakistan: “I can’t believe it. Unbelievable feeling. Thanks to Amir, he played really well. I told him to play his game and not to worry about the scoreboard. Even if we go 3-4 runs per over, if we go close to 30 runs, we will win. I think it was a tough chase. Amir was playing confidently, but I was feeling the pressure. It (dropped catches) is part of the game. All credit goes to the bowlers. First three overs, there was some movement but after the sun came out, wicket played better. Zaman played a great innings for us and he’s a great prospect for Pakistan. I think England is a tough team. We have to play positive cricket against England (talking about the semifinal match-up)”

14th appearance for Pakistan in the semifinals of ICC events (WC, CT & WT20) – the joint most for a team along side Australia & India.

Sarfraz Ahmed is the first Pakistan captain to win Man of the Match award in Champions Trophy.

Three Asian sides in the semifinals of an ICC event:WC 2011: Ind, SL & PakCT 2017: Ind, Ban & Pak

Fourth time PAK has progressed to semifinals of ICC CT – they lost on all the three previous instances.–by 4 wickets v NZ, Nairobi, 2000–by 7 wickets v WI, Rose Bowl, 2004–by 5 wickets v NZ, Joburg, 2009

Babar Azam and Hafeez departed almost together. If Azhar Ali’s wicket looked a serious blow, Malik’s wicket had Pakistan on the mat. Sarfraz was there, watching it all from the non-striker’s end. Took over to reign in a partnership with Amir, who was superb today, and took Pakistan home. Sri Lanka, it has to be said, plotted their own ouster. Sarfraz, at the most crucial of times, was dropped twice. Both off Malinga and then there were gazillion overthrows, and missed run-out chances.

Bangladesh Women have been a touch wayward with the bowling and will want to improve on that as the match progresses.

TOSS: West Indies Women have won the toss and elect to bat

West Indies Women and Bangladesh Women will be led by their regular Twenty20 International (T20I) skippers, Stafanie Taylor and Jahanara Alam respectively. Bangladesh Women began their World T20 campaign against India where they were thoroughly outclassed by Mithali Raj and Co in all the departments. India had posted 163 in 20 overs after being put to bat first. In reply, the visitors struggled from ball No. 1 and eventually fell short of 72 runs. Bangladesh’s wicketkeeper-batsman Nigar Sultana was the only batter to have stuck at the crease for a long time scoring some 27 odd runs. Bangladesh next faced England and lost that match as well. So, it is not wrong to assume the World T20 is more or less over for them.

Playing the West Indies on Sunday, they will only look to return to winning ways and maybe spoil West Indies’ party who won their opening match against Pakistan and are well open for the next round.

Squads:

West Indies: Stafanie Taylor (c), Merissa Aguilleira (wk), Shamilia Connell, Deandra Dottin, Stacy-Ann King, Kyshona Knight, Anisa Mohammed, Tremayne Smartt, Kycia Knight, Shekera Selman, Shemaine Campbelle, Britney Cooper, Afy Fletcher, Heyley Matthews, Shaquana Quintyne

India vs Sri Lanka, 8th Match, Group B – Live Cricket Score, Commentary

So, group B. What have you got? The table is wide open for all 4 sides, Still one game left for each side. India-South Africa and Pakistan-Sri Lanka. Both must-win encounters for each of them. A perfect advert for Champions Trophy. Of all the games so far, one can affirm that today’s clash was perhaps the most competitive. And hey! Did I mention that Sri Lanka have chased the highest ever ODI total on this ground. And also the highest ever successful chase in Champions Trophy. “Never take anything for granted” – lesson learnt for the day. With that pleasant thought, Raju Peethala bids goodbye on behalf of the entire team [Sagar Chawla, Pradeep, Ramakrishnan, Srivathsa and our scorer Naga].

Stats and trivia:

– India’s first loss in eight CT matches since losing to Pakistan in 2009 – the joint longest successful run along with West Indies

– The target of 322 chased down is:
>> Highest in CT
>> Joint highest by SL in all ODIs
>> Joint highest against India in all ODIs

– Rohit – Dhawan became the most successful pair in CT matches – 636 runs in seven innings going past 635 runs by Gayle & Chanderpaul

– Dhawan became the joint highest century maker in CT with three hundreds. The other players to hit three hundreds each are Ganguly, Gibbs & Gayle

– India became the third team to score 300 in five successive ODI innings after Australia (six in 2007) and Sri Lanka (five in 2006).

Sri Lanka did what Pakistan did to South Africa yesterday. These global events may not compromise minnows, but there will be no less entertainment. It’s all about staying competitive and not being complacent. Maybe this loss came at the right time for India, one would think. They might have to reassess their bowling combination. As far as Sri Lanka are concerned, this win couldn’t have come at a better time. Timely and tremendous. A win against India will certainly keep them pumping for the rest of the tournament.

Kohli: We all felt we had enough on the board at the half-way mark. We trusted our bowlers, but they were pretty good on the day. Kept their momentum going and executed their shots really well. Our bowlers bowled decently, but they batted really well. There is always hindsight to think when you don’t win games, as I said we bowled decently well, but the execution wasn’t quite there. Obviuosly there is food for thought, but you gotta give credit to other teams as well. You don’t take any team lightly. It’s going to be like this throughout the tournament and we don’t expect anything less.

Mathews: It’s one of the top wins. To beat India is quite fantastic. Good effort from the bowlers, they restricted India to 321. We know this is a good batting wicket and 300 is quite chaseable. You try and hit as many balls in the nets and try and keep yourself fit. As long as you hit balls and keep fit that’s all counts. To walk in and bat like he did was fantastic. Kusal Mendis is a great player and we rate him very highly. Kusal Perera also played a good hand. Those crucial partnerships were the key for us. It’s a must-win game for all of us in the next game. Not many people expected us to win and that took the pressure off us. Go out there and express ourselves is the plan and that will be the plan next game as well. I thought the opening partnership, they set us the platform for the middle order to go out and express ourselves. I think that was a turning point in the match.

Mendis: “It was a very good wicket. Dhawan batted well. I had a good partnership with Danushka (Gunathilaka). I am very happy to have won my first game against India. Kusal (Perera) and Angelo (Mathews) batted very well too.”

Kusal Mendis is the Man of the Match

Gunathilaka, despite playing his first game in a global event, showed great maturity at the top. He hung in and stitched a game-changing partnership with Kusal Mendis. There were moments of nervousness when both of them got run out in quick succession, but the experience of Angelo Mathews and the power of Gunaratne saw Sri Lanka hop home quite comfortably. Indian bowling, apart from Bhuvi, looked out of shape. Didn’t stick to their strengths and tried too many variations when batters hit them out of their lines. Fielding wise, they were quite sloppy. Dropped as far as 3 catches and missed a few run out chances.

18:21 local: Fistpumps, throat-piercing screams, faces filled with delight. Scenes in the Sri Lankan dressing room. They have every reason to enjoy and cherish this spectacular victory. No-one gave them a chance to be honest. Before the start of the game, if someone had said that Sri Lanka would beat India by 7 wickets, I would have laughed and ridiculed them for their foolishness. Happy to be proven wrong now. Cricket is a funny game and it continues to prove why.
