Sri Lanka’s unique preparation for SA tour – practice on granite pitches

Sri Lanka, who are embarking on a tour of South Africa after five years, are gearing up for the two-month tour by practising on granite surfaces in order to equip themselves to the Proteas’ fast bowlers.

Updated: Dec 17, 2016 20:10 IST

Buoyed by victories in their most recent five Test matches, Sri Lanka embark on a two-month tour of South Africa with a three-day match against a youthful South African Invitation XI, starting in Potchefstroom on Sunday.

It is likely to be a relatively gentle introduction to a tough challenge in a country where Sri Lanka have struggled on four previous tours.

In anticipation of having to deal with South Africa’s strong fast bowling attack on pitches with pace and bounce, the Sri Lankan batsmen practised on granite surfaces before leaving for the tour.

Highlights

  • Sri Lanka have won only one Test and lost eight in South Africa
  • Sri Lanka recently won a two-Test series against Zimbabwe 2-0
  • Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews return to the side after missing the Zimbabwe tour due to injury
  • Sri Lanka will play three Tests, three Twenty20 internationals and five ODIs against South Africa

Sri Lanka have been beaten in eight of the ten Test matches they have played in South Africa, with just one win and one draw.

But they have done better in one-day internationals.

Although South Africa have won 15 times on home soil, Sri Lanka have had seven wins and a tie in 2003 which ended South Africa’s hopes of progressing in a World Cup they hosted.

The current tour includes three Test matches, five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals.

Dinesh Chandimal the key for Sri Lanka

It is Sri Lanka’s first tour of South Africa in five years and there are only five survivors from the 2011/12 tour — captain Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Rangana Herath, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva.

Dinesh Chandimal made his debut in 2011 against South Africa in Durban and he scored two fifties. (AFP)

Chandimal made his debut and hit two half-centuries in Sri Lanka’s only Test win in South Africa, in the second Test in Durban, while Herath took nine wickets and was man of the match.

Mathews and Chandimal helped Sri Lanka in a 3-0 home Test series win against Australia but missed a recent 2-0 victory in Zimbabwe because of injuries.

Both are likely to be key players if Sri Lanka are to challenge a South African Test team which is coming off a third successive away series win in Australia.

After a succession of leg injuries, Mathews is confident that he will be able to play a full all-rounder’s role in a country where his seam bowling is likely to be needed more than in his home country.

The first Test, though, is in Port Elizabeth, which usually provides the slowest and lowest of South Africa’s Test pitches.

The Sri Lankans arrived in South Africa last Sunday and have had a full week of preparation in Potchefstroom, a university town an hour’s drive from Johannesburg which is a favoured training venue for a variety of international sporting teams and individuals.

The Invitation XI consists mainly of some of South Africa’s most promising young players, led by experienced Cape Cobras and South Africa A batsman Omphile Ramela. Off-spinner Dane Piedt is the only Test player in the side.

Sri Lanka Test squad: Angelo Mathews (captain), Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kaushal Silva, Dhananjaya de Silva, Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Kumara, Vikum Sanjaya, Nuwan Pradeep, Dushmantha Chameera, Suranga Lakmal, Dilruwan Perera, Rangana Herath.

India look to get back to winning ways in 2-day tour match against South African Invitational XI

India to begin two-day tour game against South African Invitation XI in Benoni on Friday.

| Updated : December 13, 2013 12:00 PM IST

Benoni: Dec 12 2013

The beleaguered Indian batting line-up which has been rattled by fiery pace and disconcerting bounce during One-Day International (ODI) series will like to start afresh, when they take on a South African Invitational XI in a two-day practice game, starting in Benoni on Friday.

The match which is being held at the Sahara Willowmoore Park — some 30 kms in the outskirts of Johannesburg is not an official First-Class match as it is a two-day game where opposition teams are expected to bat on either days.

As this is not an official match, there will be provision for the batsmen to retire if they feel that they have got enough batting practice.

The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma along with Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara will like to get a decent hit out there in the middle before they take on the formidable South African attack in the first Test starting December 18.

That is important, since the Indian team were robbed of much needed game time in the third ODI, when rain washed off the second innings without a ball being bowled.

Almost all Indian batsmen will be looking forward to batting against a second-string bowling attack. Dhawan, Kohli and Rohit need runs, while Murali Vijay and Pujara will need to acclimatize quickly to the conditions here.

The match is likely to give an indication as to who will be taking the coveted No 4 slot in the batting line-up vacated by Sachin Tendulkar‘s retirement.

If India go in with seven specialist batsmen, the toss-up will be between Ambati Rayudu and Ajinkya Rahane, both of whom will get an opportunity to bat against a second string South African bowling attack.

At the start of the tour, while bowling was of major concern, it has now reversed to problems for the Indian batting.

The Indian batting has a formidable look for its performance on the flat wickets in the sub-continent but they fell like ninepins when faced with some inspired fast bowling by Dale Steyn and company.

The Indian bowlers on the otherhand fared a little better showcasing an improvement as the ODI series progressed.

But these are old problems now, relatively, as the longer format takes over. One of the positives for Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s boys is that they have new company in the form of Test regulars here.

Murali Vijay, Chetesehwar Pujara, Pragyan Ojha, Wriddhiman Saha and Zaheer Khan reached here earlier. Even so, they have been training on their own, as a separate group from the ODI team, who were busy travelling to Durban and Centurion for the matches.

These five players have been shielded from the barrage of Proteas’ aggression, and as such can provide a new energy and perspective to the Test team, which will now come to the fore.

The group that now forms has been successful in recent times, reversing the failure against England at home, and winning six consecutive Tests at home against Australia and West Indies. Senior pro Zaheer is back, and now in Tendulkar’s absence, he is the senior-most player in the side. Not to mention, he will provide much needed bite to the bowling attack, lending experience in terms of what line and lengths to bowl, something sorely missed in the ODI series.

Since 12 players will be allowed per side, it will be an added advantage for the Indian team, for they will also get to test their entire bowling line-up.

Teams:

India: MS Dhoni (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami

SA Invitational XI: Stephen Cook (captain), Temba Bavuma, Andrew Birch, Simon Harmer, Beuran Hendricks, Reeza Hendricks, Eddie Leie, Chris Morris, Rilee Rossouw, Yaseen Vallie, Stiaan van Zyl, Dane Vilas, Hardus Viljoen.

Keshav Maharaj

South Africa

Keshav Maharaj is a committed wholehearted performer. A calculating left arm orthodox spinner who can bowl at any stage of the innings and a handy right-handed lower order batsman. Maharaj made his first-class debut at the age of 16 for KwaZulu-Natal in 2006-07. He was promoted to the Dolphins team in 2009-10.

He toured Bangladesh with the South Africa Academy in April-May 2010, taking 13 wickets in the two four-day matches against Bangladesh Cricket Board Academy. He also took 4 for 12 off four overs, opening the bowling, in one of the T20 matches. He played for South Africa A against the touring Bangladesh A team in 2010-11.

He played for Cuckfield in the Sussex Premier League in 2013. He signed to play as a professional for Nelson in the Lancashire League in 2015. He was included in the KwaZulu-Natal cricket team squad for the 2015 Africa T20 Cup.

A consistent performer, Maharaj strode into the national team on the back of a fine domestic season and was taken as the first-choice spinner on the tour of Australia in late 2016. He made his debut in Perth and has since then emerged as their first-choice spinner.

A classical left-arm spinner, Maharaj has since then emerged as the ideal foil for South Africa’s stellar pace attack. On helpful surfaces, he can emerge as the trump card, as reflected during the tour of New Zealand, where he emerged as South Africa’s leading bowler with 15 wickets. He followed it up with 17 wickets from four Tests against England.

Maharaj has an impressive career record considering he’s mostly played on unhelpful surfaces in England and Oceania. His real Test might come in the sub-continent, but as of now, he’s certainly positioned himself as the go to bowler for South Africa in the red-ball format of the game.

Islamabad: Jan 8, 2013

The Pakistani cricket team returned home after completing a successful Indian tour as enthusiastic fans and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials accorded them a hero’s welcome at the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore.

Pakistan squared the two-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series 1-1 and won the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series 2-1 against the World Champions during their first tour to India in five years. This is the first time since 2005 that Pakistan has defeated India on their home ground, reports Xinhua.

Dancing and chanting slogans in favour of national cricketers, fans showered rose-petals on the team as soon as they appeared outside the airport lounge.

Speaking to media at the airport Monday, skipper Misbah-ul-Haq gave credit to the performing youngsters and said he was happy with the team’s overall show.

T20I skipper Mohammad Hafeez, who achieved top position in the ICC ODI rankings for all-rounders Monday, said he was proud of his achievement and dedicated the victory to the nation.

PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf was the centre of attraction at the airport as he not only showered praise on his cricketers but also introduced the future of cricket diplomacy with India. He said that Bangladesh Cricket Board has not refused to send its team to Pakistan.

This is only the third time in the history of Pakistan-India bilateral series after 1987 and 2005 where Pakistan have inflicted defeat on India on their home soil.

Pakistan and India have locked horns in 30 ODIs on Indian soil with Pakistan winning 19 and losing 11 of them.

Pakistan’s next international assignment is the tough tour to South Africa which gets underway from Jan 25 with the warm-up four-day match against South African Invitation XI at Buffalo Park in East London.
