Makerere University to Host World University Netball Championship

Makerere University is to host the World University Netball Championship, the first time in Uganda. The event which is expected to attract over 10,000 participants from across the globe is scheduled to start on September 15 and run up to September 21, next year, 2018.

The Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Charles Bakkabulindi, while launching the 3rd Edition of the World University Netball Championship on Tuesday August 1, 2017 at Makerere University described it as a golden opportunity for the country.

“I salute the people who won the bid. This is a national issue. Hosting the Netball Championships presents a lot of opportunities to Uganda and Makerere University. It reminds me of the benefits when Uganda hosted CHOGM in 2007,” said Hon. Bakkabulindi.

Mr. Bakkabulindi who promised to work hard to ensure that the Uganda University Netball Team emerges the winner, unveiled the Championship Logo, website and social media platforms which signify the readiness of the Ministry of Education and Sports and the Government of Uganda at large to support and market the event.

The Acting Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe who is also the president of the local organizing committee of the event highlighted the great prospects that will be achieved by Makerere University, including changing the university’s sports facilities through extensive renovations.

He also called upon the Government, Makerere University community, alumni, the sports fraternity, and other stakeholders to join the fundraising drive aimed at constructing a 3,000 seater multi-purpose indoor stadium at Makerere University.

Speaking on behalf of the Uganda Netball Federation, Ms Jocelyne Ucanda promised support towards the successful organization of the event.

“The netball story in Uganda is of progression. Let us remember that sports brings young people together. It is our responsibility to provide a secure learning environment for students to value their lives. I promise you due support from the Uganda Netball Federation,” said Ucanda.

Makerere University in conjunction with the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) won a bid to host the event which is organized every even year by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). FISU also coordinates activities of over 150 national university sports federations, and holds world university championships in popular university sports.
