29th Winter Universiade

29th Winter Universiade

Krasnoyarsk (RUS), 2 – 12 March 2019

What’s to come at the 29th Winter Universiade

When Krasnoyarsk 2019 organisers say, “welcome to real winter” there’s meaning behind the motto. Situated in the heart of Siberia, the place has deep sporting roots.

As the capitol of the Krasnoyarsk territory in Russia, the city is ideally suited to cement its position as a top-level winter sports venue. Already 19 athletes from the region have won gold medals at the Olympic Games, with three others becoming Paralympic Games champions.

Fitting the FISU motto of “today’s stars, tomorrow’s leaders,” Krasnoyarsk is not only one of the more sporting cities in the world. It is also an academic hub with more than 120 thousand university students. All told, the city is home to nine institutions of higher education, including the State University of Siberia.

Krasnoyarsk sits next to the Stolby Nature Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the Eastern Sayan Mountains. The rugged, rocky landscape covered in a deep blanket of snow is an ideal canvas for winter sports competitors.

Krasnoyarsk is not new to the game of staging winter sports competitions and is a regular host to national competitions in alpine skiing, bandy, biathlon, snowboarding and freestyle skiing. Organisers are particularly enthused that bandy, known as “Russian hockey” in the host country, is part of the Winter Universiade for the first time in 2019.

As the upcoming host, Krasnoyarsk will gain its first experience in organising an international multisport event at the 29 th Winter Universiade. Krasnoyarsk 2019 organisers have the full backing of the Russian Federation, which brings a wealth of experience having already hosted the 1973 Summer Universiades, 1980 Summer Olympics, 2013 Summer Universiade and 2014 Winter Olympics.

The city along the Yenisei River began its bid to host the 2019 Winter Universiade when FISU attributed the event to Krasnoyarsk on 9 November 2013. Since then Krasnoyarsk organisers have been preparing to host the premier sports and educational event in the world.

Krasnoyarsk, a City with a ‘Real Winter’!

For the 29th Winter Universiade, Krasnoyarsk looks set to welcome the world’s best university student athletes to "real winter"

Located in the North East of the Russian Federation, the city of Krasnoyarsk has a continental climate with hot summers and (very) cold winters. This is great since the Krasnoyarsk Organising Committee promises to offer us the experience of a ‘Real Winter’ in 2019, according to its slogan. In this region the white gold is abundant and provides perfect practice for all winter sports.

A young city – up to 41 % of its population is younger than thirty – Krasnoyarsk has over 40 youth organisations that are very active and interconnected. It is also a university city with 9 institutes of higher education, the oldest being the State University of Siberia for Technology which was founded in 1930. It counts more than 100,000 students and interns from 39 countries. Krasnoyarsk is a sports town as well since 20% of its population is involved in sports in one way or another. Due to its four sports academies, it is also a cradle of great champions who compete in major national and international events.

Krasnoyarsk is not inexperienced in staging winter sports competitions. Although it has not yet organised any international major multi-sport events, it is a regular host for national competitions in alpine skiing, biathlon, snowboarding and freestyle skiing.

Krasnoyarsk and its region offer in any case a well-stocked infrastructure dedicated to winter sports. Some venues will be renovated and others replaced for the occasion. In addition, all new sports complexes will be built for the Universiade and among them, several ice rinks and a major center for snow sports.

Finally, athletes will be housed in a new Athletes’ Village, which is seldom the case for the Winter Universiade.

The Organising Committee shall have all the support of the Russian Student Sports Union (RSSU).

"FISU” is the official application of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). It gives you a direct access to the FISU news with the latest updates on the federation and its sports competitions. You will also find the results of FISU’s major sporting events in progress, i.e. Summer Universiade, Winter Universiade or World University Championships.
